2.17 Heart

Sam: "Maybe when the creature takes over, she blacks out."
Dean: "Like a really hot Incredible Hulk?"

Sam must be lucky at cards, because he's sure crapping out at love. (Is that a mixed metaphor?)

At first, it seemed that it was going to be a fun, unambiguous, exciting hunt, with something truly evil to kill and none of those pesky shades of grey. Dean was even excited about it, almost like a kid. But then it kind of turned into a situation like Molly's in "Roadkill." Grey all over the place.

Madison was very likeable, so much so that I really didn't want her to be the werewolf. (I particularly loved the way she dumped the laundry basket of tiny undies on the table in front of Sam.) She and Sam had some very cute and believable chemistry, so of course, she had to die. At least she and Sam had a moment, as well as some really hot sex, before her early and unfair demise. That was the first time for Sam since Jessica died, wasn't it?

I expected the dog jokes, but the last thing I expected was tears. Sam's were exceptionally effective, as was Dean's single tear. The musical score sort of ran away with them in that last big scene and I didn't cry myself or anything, but this was still a very good episode. I keep expecting the obvious from Supernatural (that it was Kurt, for example), but they keep not doing the obvious. Good writing there.

Bits and pieces:

-- Sam was falling in love with a classy woman while Dean was at a strip club. Can you say, stereotypically in character?

-- Have we seen Sam with his shirt off before? I think I would remember. Wow. And it deserves repeating. Wow, again.

-- The Buffy fan within couldn't help but wonder why locking Madison up during the full moon, like they did with Oz, was so out of the question. Was it that being a werewolf would eventually make her evil? The way Sam shot her reminded me of Old Yeller. More with the dog comparisons.

-- Dean and Sam introduced themselves as detectives Landis and Dante, who were actually the directors of "The Howling" and "American Werewolf in London".

-- Emmanuelle Vaugier keeps showing up in shows I like.

-- Teryl Rothery, who played the police doctor, also played Dr. Janet Frasier on "Stargate SG-1."

-- This week we went to San Francisco, California.

Quotes:

Sam: "Okay, Sparky, and you know what? After we kill it, we can go to Disneyland."

Sam: "Check the freezer. Maybe there's some human hearts behind the Haagen-Dazs or something." Alliteration and everything.

Sam: "All right. You go, I'll stay."
Dean: "Forget that. You go after the creepy ex. I'm going to hang here with the hot chick."
Sam: "Dude. Why do you always get to hang out with the girls?"
Dean: "Because I'm older."

Sam: "Dean. Always with the scissors."

Madison: "My house, my TV. I never get to watch my show, so suck it up."

Sam: "What were you doing with Kurt?"
Madison: "I don't know. I mean, it's not like he introduced himself, like, Hi, I'm possessive and controlling and I like to punch people. Want to be my girlfriend?"
Why does the name Kurt always sound like it belongs to a Nazi?

Sam: "What if the animal part of her brain saw both those guys as threats? The cop, too?"
Dean: "What, are you a dog whisperer now?"

Again, three out of four silver bullets,

Billie
