4.16 Lucy

Lex: "She played us like a Stradivarius."

Another reminder that blood ties don't necessarily make a family. Lucy, talented and spoiled, threw away all the good things she had and made some seriously bad choices. I didn't like her, even when she was supposed to be good.

But this episode wasn't just about Lucy, after all. It actually gave us an endearing glimpse of the Lois within. Lois didn't have a fun childhood or understanding parents, like Clark. (She actually calls her own father "the general.") And she never had a good relationship with her sister. It was rather touching that Lois was not only uber-protective of Lucy, but also under the mistaken impression that Lucy had more to offer the world than Lois did. Lois may be brassy and bold, but she is hiding an inferiority complex.

Someone stole the stone from Jason and Lana, and Jason went apeshit on Lionel... in front of Lana. Lana finally noticed that Jason was more interested in Kryptonian artifacts than in her. (Well, duh.) Jason's good-guy facade was fading fast. I was really surprised that it was Lana (or possibly Isobel) who had the stone. How did she manage to mess up her apartment when she was out with Jason at the same time?

Bits and pieces:

-- The teaser was right out of James Bond.

-- Lex, Lois, and Lucy were crammed in Lex's sports car, with Lois on the gearshift. :)

-- The menacing evil German loan shark was played by one of my faves, Peter Wingfield, who played my favorite immortal, Methos, on "Highlander." And he's Welsh, not German.

-- The actress who played Lucy not only looked like Lois, she was even nearly as tall as Erica Durance. Good casting there.

-- That truck leaping stunt was pretty cool. Clark broke the glass in the semi's cab to get to Becker. Auto glass is two points.

-- Chloe gave Clark yet another opening to tell her the truth about himself, and he gave her a look. Maybe he's starting to get the idea.

-- I get a charge out of a beneficent Lionel floating around the mansion being wise and helpful. :) It's a good look for him.

Quotes:

Lois: "You're going to find that Clark's charm is an acquired taste, much like his sense of fashion."

Jason: "Lana, this isn't some bad dream that you can just blink away. This is real life."
And he said it with a straight face. I love Smallville, but let's face it. It's definitely not real life. :)

Lex: "Two Lanes under one roof. That's got to be interesting."
Clark: "I haven't had a hot shower in two days. And the laundry machine is running non-stop. The phone line is consistently busy."

Clark: "I'm really sorry."
Lois: "Don't be. There's something cathartic about telling a three-star general to go to hell."

The standard good Smallville episode. Three stars,

Billie
