News flash: CBS is currently airing an edited version of Dexter season one on Sunday nights. Season three of Dexter will return to Showtime this fall.
Dexter is about a serial killer who isn't like other serial killers: he has a code of honor instilled in him from childhood and only kills those who truly deserve it. I don't like cop shows, forensics shows, or stories about serial killers, so this is exactly the sort of show I thought I'd hate. But Dexter just brilliant. It's so clever, well-written, exciting, touching, and even funny that it transcends the material.
Since it airs on Showtime, Dexter is R-rated for violence and gore, and it can be seriously heavy. But the killing and the violence are dramatic trappings. It's really about what is going on inside of Dexter, who is the ultimate in alienated human beings. There is no doubt that he is a very scary man, but he is also deeply protective of the innocent and truly cares about the people in his life. We can tell that there is a real human being hiding inside of Dexter. And that's what keeps me watching.
