3.12 Rapture Tigh: "You've seen one nova, you've seen them all." The nova itself was the Eye of Jupiter. It was a marker intended to point the way to Earth, 13,000 light years away. I think. I'm mildly confused about that part. Lucy Lawless just got written out of the series, didn't she? (At least until some future time when the writers decide they need her again.) That's what you get for going all messianic, I suppose. This surprise development made me think about whether or not I was going to miss D'Anna, and I came to the conclusion that I won't. I love Lucy Lawless, don't get me wrong, but I like Six, Sharon, Leoben, and Cavil a lot better than D'Anna. And I think Six in particular has been overshadowed by the advent of Xena. I am particularly intrigued by the story possibilities now that Caprica Six and Gaius are on Galactica. Whose face did D'Anna recognize? She said to one of the glowing Cylons, "You. Forgive me, I had no idea." Then just afterward, she said to Gaius, "You were right." The logical answer is that it was indeed Gaius, since he was pretty much constantly theorizing that he was one of the Final Five. I could be wrong, though. I often am. I thought it took tremendous courage for Athena to ask Helo to kill her, and for Helo to actually go through with it. Those fighting Agathons, they're something. I have to give credit to the writers, because I can honestly see both sides of the Agathons versus Laura Roslin. Yes, Helo and Athena have been terribly wronged. But Roslin may have the most difficult administration in history. Her day-to-day decisions could literally either save or destroy her race, after all. I even wondered during this episode if Athena might have lied to Helo about coming back from the base star. Boomer was programmed to shoot Adama, after all. She was ready to kill Hera, too, until Caprica Six stopped her. What other kinds of programming are lurking beneath Athena's loyal fighter pilot exterior? If Athena hadn't (conveniently) found a way to escape from the base star with Hera, would she have turned in order to keep her baby? On top of all of the cool Cylon stuff, we also had husbands and wives on missions together. Husbands and wives full of barely restrained hostility. Lee and Sam having a testosterone collision was predictable, but I loved Dualla being forced to rescue Starbuck. Dualla did her duty and did it well, but was clearly pissed about it every single moment. The way Lee embraced her when she returned was sooo uncomfortable (and looking at Starbuck over Dualla's shoulder? Shame on you, Lee). At least Sam and Dualla are still with us. I keep thinking they both have targets on their backs. In fact, when Anders said "it's as good a place as any to die" I thought, uh-oh. Finally, in the exceptionally weird category, how did Starbuck paint the Eye of Jupiter on her apartment wall before the holocaust? There appear to be "Chosen Ones" all over the place. Chosen for what? Is it like the arrow thing? Bits and pieces: -- This week's survivor count: 41,401, one less than last time. That was Athena, because we got the count right after Helo killed her. -- Now that the Threes have been boxed (harsh), are they going to create another line of Cylons? And should Sharon and Six start worrying? I mean, considering all the stuff they've tried to pull, if I were Sharon and Six, I'd be worried. -- Katee Sackhoff did her usual outstanding acting job with those burned hands. I could almost feel how painful they were. -- We found out what was wrong with Hera. She is literally full of it. -- Lee actually threw a live grenade to Sam to throw at the toasters. What if Sam had dropped it? Guess that would have solved the divorce problem, huh? -- Boomer appears to have joined the Cylon John Birch Society. Death to humans. That's too bad. -- Pretty cool special effects as the star went nova. They do an amazing job considering how limited their budget must be. -- They didn't show the ships coming in at the end of the episode. It felt odd. Maybe they ran out of time. -- Athena was in a body bag at the beginning of the episode, and Gaius was in a body bag at the end. And neither of them was actually dead. Interesting bookends. Quotes: Dualla: "My husband ordered me to risk my life for yours. That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to bring Starbuck back to Apollo." Poor Dualla. Sam: "If Kara dies out there, I swear to gods I will kill you myself." Lee: "If she dies out there, I'll let you." D'Anna: "To know the face of God is to know madness." Where have I heard that song before? Starbuck: "I love Sam. I hate Sam. I love Lee. I hate Lee. Gods, I have to cheat just to keep the pieces all nice and neat." Fascinating episode, with a lot going on. But was it a four? Billie |
