4.9 Long Day's Journey
Wesley: "As far as evil plans go, it doesn't suck."
This week, the Beast is after the Five Totems of Ra-Tet, which would be a good name for a rock group. He wants to blot out the sun and turn L.A. into a demon playground. I think he's a little late with that one.
Relationships among the L.A. Scoobies continue to shift. Cordelia has some nerve telling Angel to "get over it"; Fred and Wesley seem to be bonding as they click away with the theories, do research, and chant together; Gunn is obviously feeling outclassed and excluded; and Angel is still justifiably furious with Cordelia and certainly enjoying the attention he's getting from Miss Defibrillator Hands. I like Gwen, by the way. She has a cool superpower, she can carry off spandex in primary colors, and she hasn't slept with Connor.
Cordelia's visions are back... but they're not visions, are they? They're memories of Angelus and the Beast, having some sort of good time together in the Olden Days. I'm confused about the end, though; Angel *did* kill Manny while under the Beast's influence, right? Does this maybe remind you of what was happening over in Sunnydale with Spike and the First?
So... Angelus might be returning next week. Does Wesley think they'll actually be able to control Angelus? Wesley wasn't around in Buffy's second season, was he?
Bits and pieces:
-- Lorne: "Got you some nice O poz here, freshly nuked for that right-out-of-the-jugular taste."
-- Wesley: "Her name was Mesektet." Fred: "I figured Tiffany or Brandy."
-- Gwen: "Demon, okay, the whole nine. Cloven feet and horns and teeth and... (she sees Lorne for the first time) he wasn't wearing lame, though." Lorne: "Yeah, the evil ones can't pull it off; it gets camp."
-- I did like Manny; every line that came out of his mouth made me laugh. Good character actor there.
-- We heard nothing more about Wolfram & Hart's zombie debacle this week, except that "Creepy-locks" the Ra-Tet was their connection to the senior partners. Is W&H still in business?
-- Lorne called the Beast "Doctor Feelbad" and "El Destructo." He also called Angel "Angelfood."
-- Cordelia. Dark hair. Finally.
-- Gwen's place was pretty impressive, and how about that camouflage?
-- Gwen: "So was that one of Manny's powers? Extra blood and guts? That's a lot of blood and guts. No way that Stephen King came out of a normal guy."
I liked parts of this particular episode, no pun intended, but I think the story as a whole was a little weak. Can't wait for next week, though. 2.5? Three out of four stakes?
