4.12 Calvary
Gunn: "That shaman shoulda never been brought here. Now instead of just worrying about the big bad rock eater, we got Darth Vampire living in the basement."
This might be stating the obvious, but hey -- do you think something might be wrong with Cordelia?
What's going on? Would the real Cordelia release a monster like Angelus upon the world? Would she kill Lilah for any reason other than self-defense? No. So is she, somehow, not Cordelia? She sure was acting like Cordelia, up until that last scene. Is she being controlled by either the Beast's Boss -- the First? -- or (here's a thought) by the Powers That Be? Did she come back from Floaty-land with an agenda that included seducing Connor and getting something from Angelus?
I thought Angelus' needling wasn't quite as effective as it was last week. The best stuff involved that whole conversation with flamethrower-holding Gunn, as well as Angelus telling Fred about how good-looking Wesley had become lately, and if he swung that way... Of course, that was just an excuse to tell Fred about Wesley sleeping with Lilah, but -- still fun.
It was way too obvious at the end that Angelus was faking Angel; Angelus had to get loose, mayhem mayhem, no surprise. But how come Lorne didn't pick up on it when Angel was singing Burt Bacharach? Was Angelus under a five-minute Angel spell?
Angel's soul is gone. The Orb of Thesselah was mentioned. I'm thinking Willow.
Bits and pieces:
-- Gunn broke up with Fred; good for him. I expected it to be the other way around.
-- Pan-dimensional black market? I like it.
-- I was sorry to see Stephanie Romanov hit the dust. She was the last cool W&H villain.
Quotes:
Cordelia: "Angel's soul has been misplaced. I bet that sort of thing happens all the time. What do you have as a back-up plan to re-ensoul somebody?"
Wo Pang: "There is no other way known to me. Without the muo-ping, you're screwed."
Cordelia: "Do you know what Angelus would do if we let him out?"
Lilah: "Kill you all in a bloody shower of violence. But hey, greater good."
Cordelia: "Man, I'd love to punch your face in."
Lilah: "Are you trying to turn me on?"
Lilah: "It's just like being at work, except suits by Liberace."
Lorne: "Wesley, would you please warn this walking infection that I haven't forgotten how she poked my head open like a Capri Sun, and while my love for humanity allows me to tolerate her presence, if need be I will smack her down. Be a doll, thanks."
Wesley: "So you have nowhere else to go."
Lilah: "Just waiting to prove that your Powers That Be are all hat and no cattle. And if they do pull it through, well then, braid my hair and call me Pollyanna."
Lilah: "It's my inner megalomaniac. I rebel at serving coffee."
Cordelia: "I don't understand how the spell didn't work."
Lilah: "Dud ex machina. There's a surprise."
Angelus: "What happened to pedestrians? Human pedestrians? Is there no fast food left in Los Angeles?"
I can't quite put my finger on why, but this one was a bit of a let-down after the excellence of last week's. Maybe it would have had a stronger impact if I still cared about Cordelia.
Two out of four stakes,
Billie
