1.21 Blind Date

Angel: "I'm sorry. I nodded off. Did you get to the part where you're evil?"

When Wolfram & Hart terminate an employee, they don't fool around. They have an interesting variation on the standard urine test, too.

Wow, do I like Lindsey. I'm not sure what inspired the writers to start developing his character, but I'm glad they did. Lindsey injects some Krychek-like villainy and tension into the show, and he plays well off Angel. No, wait -- let me elaborate. He plays extremely well off Angel, and Angel off of him as well; the air practically crackled when they were in the same room. I liked Lindsey's unlawyer-like uncombed hair, his cool eyes, and his amazing sangfroid, which he managed to maintain even with sang all over him. And I knew that he would go back to the fold as soon as the boss man started buttering him up.

That's two really good new characters, two weeks in a row. I like Gunn a lot, too, and I really really really hope he stays in the cast. He was just terrific in that decoy-vamp-in-the-lobby scene.

The other part of the plot about the blind assassin sort of left me waiting, even though I liked the idea of an unprosecutable assassin. White eyes? How can that be achieved by self-mutilation? It was probably tied into why the child seers also had white eyes, so I really shouldn't nitpick.

Two terrific fight or almost-fight scenes in this one -- (1) Angel using Wesley's dust, and (2) Angel not moving because he realized that she could only sense him through motion (because he's room temperature). Very cool. So to speak.

Bits and pieces:

-- Loved the cross-show decryption. It would be totally out of character for Cordelia to suddenly acquire computer skills at Willow's level.

-- I wonder what sort of benefits qualify as "ungodly."

-- What a mess on the carpet. Wolfram & Hart ought to rent Lethal Weapon 2.

-- Did you notice that the security guards at W&H are armed with stakes? Nice touch.

Quotes:

Wesley: "Demons with one eye, demons with twelve eyes, some with double vision, but no blind demons. Perhaps Angel's discovered a new species."
Cordelia: "What? Helen Kellerus Homocidalus?"

Wesley: "Perhaps she's simply learned to hone her senses around her disability. Angel said it was as if she anticipated his actions before he carried them out."
Cordelia: "A handy skill in fight. Or on a date."

Lindsey: "If I get myself killed, that'll convince you that I've changed."
Angel: "It's a start."

Gunn: "Give me one good reason."
Angel: "It'll be extremely dangerous."
Gunn: (grins) "Okay."

Gunn: "Oh, I get it, I get it. You all can cater to the demon, cater to the dead man, but what about the black man?"

Lindsey: "Sorry I'm late. I hope I didn't worry anyone."
Cordelia: "We just figured you were dead."

Lindsey: "You're offering me my job back?"
Holland: "Oh, no. I'm offering you a new job. A permanent one, with a thundering raise and ungodly benefits."

Gonna go with a three out of four again, and a lot of that is for Lindsey,

Billie
